The first step is to make sure that the staff member has submitted an official name change to HR. We do not process name changes for staff without it being updated with Human Resources and Payroll first.


Once their name has been officially changed, we will receive notice from HR with the change of name. This notification can take longer than might be expected. Amy will process all account name changes for Google and Active Directory. These must be completed centrally so that their email address is changed in all of the other systems.

  • If the Email address is not updated in CSIU, they will not be able to access the employee portal (including paystubs)
  • If Active Directory and the mobile account do not match, printing will not work
  • Anytime a Google Account is updated, that address needs to be updated in any system that uses Google Sign in or they won’t be able to sign in
  • Email addresses also need to be updated for Staff in PowerSchool or else they will not receive district communication
  • If the email address is not consistent across all of the other systems, it could affect integrations and communication from those systems

The actual name change will require coordination between Amy and the Tech supporting the staff member with the changed name. The Tech in the building will need to coordinate time with the staff. Upon changing either of these accounts, there are steps that need to be completed on the computer the staff member uses.



Computer Steps for Name Changes


Computer Name

  1. Unbind the computer using Directory utility
    1. MacOS 12.0 or older
      1. Open System Preferences -> Users & Groups
      2. Click login options
      3. Click edit
      4. Open Directory Utility
      5. Click Active Directory
      6. Click unbind
    2. MacOS 13.0
      1. Open System Preferences -> Users & Groups
      2. Edit Network Account Server
      3. Open Directory Utility
      4. Click Active Directory
      5. Click unbind
  2. System Preferences -> Sharing
  3. Update Sharing name using the staff member’s new name
  4. Open Self Service and run Active Directory Binding
  5. Verify that the share name and the computer name in Directory Utility match



Logon Name

  1. Open System Preferences and then go to Users
  2. Find the Mobile user to be change and right click (or CTRL+Click) on the username. Choose Advanced options from the menu that appears
  3. In the new window update the Full Name and the Username. Do not change the home directory unless you plan to also rename their home folder manually
  4. Once you click ok, the username should be updated
  5. Logout and have the employee login with their new name.



Google Account

  1. Verify that Google Drive is running in the status bar
  2. Click on it to verify that the username is updated to their new name
  3. If not, click the gear in the Google Drive menu and choose quit. Go to Applications and restart google drive.
  4. If the name is still not updated, make sure that Google Drive has completed a sync by clicking on the Google Drive icon in the Status bar.
  5. Click on the gear and choose preferences.
  6. Click the gear in the preferences menu and choose disconnect account.
  7. You will then sign back in with the new google account.



You can also just wipe the computer and reload the OS from scratch if you prefer to process name changes that way as well. 

As always, make sure that Google Drive has completed syncing all files for the user before wiping the computer. 


Name changes should be processed within a month of them being submitted to HR\IT.
